To meet the Danish mandate to generate 100% of its energy from renewables by 2030, transmission system operator Energinet wanted to harness the power of AI to help it better manage the grid and reduce the risk associated with taking equipment offline for maintenance. Energinet is using IBM Cloud Pak for Data and Watson Studio to glean operational predictions from big data using AI. Operators are currently using the solution to help evaluate planned maintenance. Other uses include assessing grid operations, understanding system bottlenecks and suggesting cost-effective investments. “If we can calculate the risk better, it will allow us to move to a place to provide the transition to renewable energy, in a cost-effective way to the Danish society,” explains Einar Ritterbusch, Head of Control Center Systems, Energinet.
