This video describes how IMS and its hierarchic structures provide a data independence capability by separating the logical and physical definition of data from the program. The logical definition, or the programmer's view of the databases, is provided via a control block called the program specification block (PSB). The physical definition of the database is provided by another control block called the database description (DBD).
