Trees and power lines don’t mix. Despite spending almost USD 10 million annually, Texas utility Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) could sometimes miss overgrowth or unnecessarily trim vegetation because it relied heavily on a scheduled cutting regimen. PEC turned to IBM's Environmental Intelligence Suite to implement the AI-enabled Vegetation Management – Predict solution. It overlays satellite imagery and other images on PEC’s electronic map to help the co-op see which lines need vegetation management, before they become problematic. The solution provides PEC with the information it needs to make sound business decisions to generate more affordable and reliable power, and to create a safer environment in which to operate its electrical system. “This solution is going to be a game-changer for our industry and Pedernales Electric Cooperative,” explains Ted Hodgkiss, Director of System Maintenance, Pedernales Electric Cooperative, Inc.
