AIX logs basic performance and system data by default for seven days. This can be extremely useful for researching an unexpected outage or performance problem for a server. The performance data is recorded with via the topasrec This data, whilst basic, is continually logging in the background and can be useful if no AIX dumps or logs or performance data has been specifically collected. Some might describe this similar in role to a "Black Box Flight Recorder" on plane. This AIX data can also be useful to examine broad system trends. In this video Alan Hunt from the AIX Support Centre describes how to check that these files are being recorded, shows where they are stord, and demonstrates some basic commands you can run against the files. It should be noted for more in-depth analysis other tools must be used, such as the snap command, perfpmr, or the AIX dump feature.
